Hand dyed and Handwoven Wearable Art by Debbi Cooper
My career as a fiber artist began at a very early age. Enchanted by my mother’s knitting & crocheting I “borrowed” her yarn and needles and taught myself. The idea that I could create something unique & fashionable was very exciting. As an adult I combined these two loves and added a third, fiber dyeing.
My philosophy in my clothing is to focus on creating interesting cloth. The handwoven pieces are created using 5 & 15 different yarns. All of the yarns are different: shiny/dull or thick/thin or bumpy/ smooth. This creates a cloth that is much more interesting.
The dyed cloth is similar in philosophy. There are layers of color instead of just one. I use a Japanese technique know as “shibiri” a more sophisticated method. It is my hope that you will find as much pleasure in wearing these cloths as I have had in making them.
